San Luis Obispo and surrounding areas
|
 |
San Luis Obispo can be found nestled in a pastoral valley dotted by ancient
volcanic peaks and bordered by California's fabled coastal mountain range.
|
| Lovely year-round San Luis Creek runs through the center of
town. Historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa (established 1772) grabs
centerstage with its sunny plaza overlooking the creek. |
 |
 |
A vibrant downtown shopping district replete with historic
buildings offers an excellent variety of shops, restaurants and movie theaters.
The J.P. Andrews Building can be seen to the left. |
| Due to the influence of Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo
enjoys a level of culture unparalleled in small cities of its size. |

San Luis Obispo weather is enviable by most standards. Winters are mild
with occasional frosts, just enough so that you can grow apples and enjoy
some fall color. Winter days are typically clear with highs in the '60s,
except during the the seasonal rains which are typically expected between
November and April.
Because of the proximity of the ocean, summers are mild, with daytime
temperatures typically in the '70s and '80s. Summer nights are cool, typically
in the '50s. San Luis Obispo is far enough inland to avoid most of the
summer fog which blankets the coastline off and on during the dry season
which typically extends from April through November.

The county of San Luis Obispo, of which the city of San Luis
Obispo is the seat, is the heart of California's beautiful Central Coast.
North of the Cuesta grade, where Highway 101 crosses the coastal mountain
range, is San Luis Obispo's North County. Because the North County is more
isolated from the coastal influence by the mountain range, the climate is
typified by hotter summers and cooler winters. Amongst the towns of Atascadero,
Paso Robles and Templeton, you'll find world-class vineyards in a pastoral
inland valley. Seen to the left is Lake Nacimiento which is a favorite recreational
and camping area outside of Paso Robles. |
| Going west from the city of San Luis Obispo, you'll encounter
the quaint coastal towns of Los Osos, Morro Bay and Cayucos. Punctuated
by spectacular Morro Rock, soaring 582 feet above the ocean's crushing surf,
is the historic fishing village of Morro Bay. It is surrounded by vast state
Park holding's, which include the estuary and tidelands of Morro Bay. |
 |
 |
Six miles north of Morro Bay along Highway 1 is Cayucos, a beach town
reminiscent of California beach town's of 50 years past. The Cayucos Pier
is seen here.
Another 20 miles up Highway 1 lands you in Cambria, situated in a primeval
pine forest. If you keep going up Highway 1 you can visit famous Hearst
Castle in San Simeon found at the gateway of the world-famous Big Sur
Coast.
|
| The drive south of San Luis Obispo is equally interesting.
In just 10 minutes you'll find yourself at the Coast near historic Port
San Luis and Avila Beach. This is the northern edge of the Five Cities area,
comprising of Shell Beach, Pismo Beach, Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande and
Oceano. Sheltered from the prevailing northwest winds, this area of the
coastline enjoys more warmth with a climate similar to that of Santa Barbara.
